HWS Debate Team Dominates Competition

This weekend, the Hobart and William Smith Debate Team — comprised of three, two-person teams — dominated their competition at the University of Vermont debate tournament.

After the five preliminary rounds of debate, the HWS team of David Hernandez '09 and Daniel Thorson '09 were in first place with a remarkable 13 out of a possible 15 points.

In a rare feat, all three HWS teams qualified for the semi-final round. Two of these teams advanced to the final round – along with a team from Bard and a team from Rochester. This resulted in half of the teams in the final round being from HWS.

Bard won the final round to take first place and three HWS debaters took individual honors, winning 4th place (Alyssa Dechow '09); 7th place (David Hernandez '09); and 10th place (Samuel Koval '09).

The HWS teams included Thorson and Hernandez, Thomas Frohlich '09 and Dechow, and Tiffany Bennett '08 and Koval. Renee Gehring '10 served as an adjudicator.
