Anne Barton, associate director of financial aid and president of the New York State Financial Aid Administrator's Association, and Donna Richardson '05 attended the New York Legislature Student Lobby Day sponsored by the Council for Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu) on Feb. 11 in Albany, N.Y.
Barton met with the following legislative offices: Senator James Alessi, Assemblyman John Kuhl, Assemblyman (and Hobart alumnus) Paul Tokasz '68, Assemblyman Brian Kolb, Assemblyman Ron Canestrari, chair of the Higher Ed Committee, Senator Joseph Bruno, state Senate majority leader, and Senator Kenneth LaValle. Richardson accompanied Barton on a number of these visits.
The visits focused on the Governor's proposals to cut aid to higher education, specifically TAP, HEOP and the STEP/C-STEP Programs.
According to Barton, “It was a very full day, but I came away with a positive feeling that the legislators are going to do all they can to restore the proposed cuts – but they also acknowledged that we are in a unique situation this year and no one can project the end results.”
