On Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday the 3rd, the William Smith Student-Athlete Advisory Council will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, with events for area youths in conjunction with William Smith Herons athletic competitions.
Jessica Mahon '08 is pleased to help organize the day's events. “Growing up, I always admired the high school and college athletes in the community. Now that I am one, I realize how important it is to pass on the tradition of women's participation in athletics,” she said.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, the Herons basketball team will take on St. Lawrence University in Bristol Gym. Face painting will begin before the game at 1:30 p.m. Admission to the game is free, and children can participate in activities during halftime. After the game, children will have a chance to meet William Smith student-athletes and collect autographs.
At 11 a.m. on Sunday, the Herons Squash Team will challenge the University of Toronto. After the match, children are invited to learn to play squash with the players. To register for the squash clinic, call Missy Krempa at (315) 781-3934.
The local celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, traditionally Feb. 6, is open to community members, faculty and students. The event has celebrated girls' and women’s participation in sports and has encouraged new participants since 1986, when it was created by a joint resolution of Congress.
Nationally, the event is sponsored by the Women's Sports Foundation, YWCA, Girls Inc., the Girl Scouts, and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports.
