The Colleges have the privilege of welcoming Michael Mills ’96 back to campus on Wednesday, March 12 and Thursday the 13th as part of the Professionals in Residence program sponsored by the Salisbury Center for Career Services.
He visited HWS in 2003 and 2006. In 2003, Mills participated in “Raise Your Voice Week,” and gave a presentation titled, “Battling Democracy’s Decline: Lessons from the Front Line.” In 2006, he returned to campus to share his knowledge on a political science discussion panel.
His talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Trinity 305. He will discuss his past and his achievements, and share his expertise in the areas of media and public relations. The following morning, he will meet with students individually; appointments are mandatory and may be made by e-mailing Joe Ambrosetti at Career Services.
While earning his degree in political science, Mills was a member of Delta Chi fraternity and the Statesmen hockey team. He continued his education at Georgia State University, graduated in 1998 and then started working as a legislative aide to a cabinet officer. From there, he embarked on a successful path that led him to his current position, regional director of corporate affairs for Wal-Mart, where he manages all media and community relations in eight southeastern states for Wal-Mart.
Mills now heads a “Go Green” campaign for Wal-Mart; the national organization has agreed to invest $500 million annually in sustainable technology. Active in the community, he tutors at-risk children who are in danger of dropping out of school because of poverty and has worked on the Get-Out-the-Votes drives with the League of Women Voters. He was a member of the Hobart College Alumni Council from 2001 to 2006 and has set up an independent record label, Barefoot Mailman Recordings.
Ambrosetti invites students to attend this invaluable opportunity to meet one of the leading men in the world of media and public relations. “Come listen and gain the great advice and wisdom Michael Mills has to offer.”
