Architectural Studies faculty members Rick Hauser and Ali Yapicioglu, also partners in the practice In Site: Architecture (I.S:A), are recipients of the 2003 Design Awards for the Rochester AIA. They received a Citation of Merit for their design of the as-yet-unbuilt sanctuary addition to the Castile Baptist Church (see image below). The jury, consisting of members of the Philadelphia AIA, stated, “This project transforms an existing church, comprised of modest agricultural structures, by the addition of a new sanctuary. The addition introduces natural light skillfully and achieves the architect's intention of creating a dignified place of worship with very humble and economical means.” Hauser and Yapicioglu recently launched a Web site that combines their teaching, experimental work and practice, at www.insitearch.com.
Hauser and Yapicioglu also have a bathroom renovation slated to be published nationally in a feature article in the May issue of Kitchen & Bath magazine. The work will be showcased as an example of architectural ingenuity overcoming difficult limitations.
