This spring, two teams from the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science competed against more than 700 other teams from
around the world in the 2003 Mathematical Contest in Modeling.
Special congratulations go to William Smith seniors Jessica Martin
and Carrie Niles for earning an Honorable Mention for their
mathematical model “Pete's Crazy Circus Adventure,” which modeled
a stuntperson jumping a motorcycle over an elephant.
The contest is held annually by the Consortium for Mathematics
and its Applications (on the web at ). Each team is given four days to develop a mathematical model for one of two problems which are posted on the contest web site
at the beginning of the contest.
Congratulations also go to the team of Hobart Senior Doo Ik Park,
Hobart junior Michael Fazio, and William Smith Junior
Elisabeth Weick for successful participation in the contest.
Scotty Orr was the faculty advisor for both teams.
