Phil Buttafuoco '83 was quoted in the May 12 New York Times story “Sport's Growth Stops Short of Div. I”. The article was about the growth of lacrosse, both in the number of places it's played, and in the number of people who choose to play. But lacrosse participation has stayed the same in Division I.
Buttafuoco, commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, said he saw the growth of the women's game at the Division I level as a window for colleges to see the value of lacrosse and someday add a men's program. “All the lacrosse fans think that it's sad that the sport has not grown more,” Buttafuoco said. “But look at women's lacrosse. I think that its growth shows a very positive future for the men's game.”
