Historical Society and American Legion Honor First West Point Graduate

The Geneva Historical Society and Winnek Post 396 of the American Legion will commemorate the 200th anniversary of General Joseph Gardner Swift's graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a wreath-laying ceremony and address at his grave. General Swift, who spent his later years in Geneva, was the first cadet to graduate from West Point. This spring, the Fund for Historic Geneva and Winnek Post paid for the restoration of the iron chains surrounding General Swift's family plot. The ceremony will also feature remarks from Captain Sean Cleveland, professor of English at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Swift's gravesite in Washington Street Cemetery.
