Professor of philosophy Steven Lee was featured in the Aug. 25 Democrat and Chronicle article “Hobart prof picked for war panel”. Lee will spend this school year studying “moral invasion” in at the U.S. Naval Academy.
“One of basic principles of just war is, war is justified if only in self-defense,” said Lee. “Humanitarian intervention runs counter to that principle.”
Lee said he hoped to put together a series of articles for journals of military ethics and a book about how just-war theory might allow for humanitarian intervention. “Our basic human obligation is to not sit by when there’s tremendous suffering being imposed on other human beings,” he said. “It’s kind of like the obligation we have to provide assistance in natural disasters.”
