Angela Tallo, a member of the William Smith Class of 2005, was quoted in the Aug. 24 Democrat and Chronicle article “Area colleges face gender gap”. Women enroll both nationally and at most Rochester-area campuses at higher rates than men and earn more degrees than men do, and that gender gap is widening far beyond the small statistical difference between the number of men and women, according to the article.
Tallo thinks the gap is due to increased gender equality. “I feel like maybe for the first time, women are being encouraged,” she said. “They could (attend) in the ’60s and ’70s, but the opportunities are so much more open now.”
