Steven Penn, assistant professor of physics, had a paper, “Mechanical loss in tantala/silica dielectric mirror coatings” published in Classical and Quantum Gravity, vol. 20, pp. 2917-2928.
Penn also presented talks on his research work in understanding the mechanical loss in fused silica substrates and in using higher order statistics to characterize LIGO data at the LIGO Science Collaboration (LSC) meeting in Hanover, Germany. The fused silica work was very well received and is generally acknowledged as being truly groundbreaking.
