Deutchman Quoted on Monroe County Election

Iva Deutchman, professor of political science, was quoted on Rochester Mayor William A. Johnson's run for Monroe County executive in the Oct. 3 Democrat and Chronicle story “Race flap roils campaign”. Johnson would be the county’s first African-American executive. Johnson’s challenger, Republican County Clerk Maggie Brooks, would be the county’s first female executive and only the second current female county executive in the state.

“I’m going to be surprised if someone says, ‘I’m not going to vote for Maggie Brooks because she’s a woman,’ but I won’t be surprised if someone says to themselves, ‘I’m not voting for Bill Johnson, period,'” said Deutchman, who studies women in politics.
