Smith Opera House Presents Cleveland Signstage on Tour’s Matilda Live on Stage

The Smith Opera House presents Cleveland Signstage on Tour's production of “Matilda” at 10 a.m. and noon on Monday, May 10. Presented as part of The Smith's ArtSmart Theatre for Young People series, this innovative theatre company returns to Geneva following the international success of its 2002 tour of “Aladdin” and last year's “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

This adaptation is based on the popular book by Roald Dahl, author of numerous children's classics. Matilda is well-mannered, very good at math, and by the age of four she knows how to find her way to the library. Matilda also knows how to be extremely and creatively naughty. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, think she's just a nuisance. Matilda rightly thinks they are only interested in watching TV and cheating people out of their money. Matilda's imagination not only allows her to make a loyal friend, Lavender, but also to wreak revenge on her unloving parents. She soon discovers she has supernatural powers which are not only going to prove useful at home but also at her school where Matilda and her classmates must contend with the scariest headmistress of them all – Miss Trunchbull. Matilda is instrumental in defeating the fiendish headmistress and helps return her victimized teacher, the enchanting Miss Honey, to her rightful place in the world. Having saved the day, Matilda is released from her parents and has the prospect of living happily ever after.

Signstage Theatre's production of “Matilda” is presented using the spatial beauty of American Sign Language and spoken English simultaneously by deaf and hearing actors. Visually the stage is filled with the movement of hands and bodies yet every word is spoken to make sure that all audience members don't miss a thing. It's a magical blend created by performing a play in two languages at the same time.

“Matilda,” recommended for grades two and up, will be presented at 10 a.m. and noon at the Smith Opera House on Monday, May 10. All seats are $4.50. Reservations are recommended. Call The Smith box office at 315-781-LIVE (5483) or toll free 866-355-LIVE (5483) to reserve seats. Visit www.thesmith.org for more information.
