South Bristol Cultural Center Announces Fall Events

South Bristol Cultural Center is pleased to release the schedule of classes and events occurring this fall at the barn. In order to celebrate the anticipated wonderful fall weather, the classes in watercolor painting will use the facility's scenic backdrop as inspiration for landscape painting. And nothing will be more enjoyable than sitting in the gardens playing a dulcimer amidst the hills dressed in vivid fall foliage during the “A Dulcimer Weekend.”

But before those special happenings, say goodbye to summer during the annual Barn Dance with zydeco sounds played by the Swamp Padres at 8 p.m. on Sept. 11. Don your best dancing boots, join the foot stompin' fun, all are welcome, but leave the animals home. Admission is $12 at the door.

Watercolors with Jan Mettee begins Tuesday, Sept. 21. Jan was honored this year as being the Waterfront Festival poster artist. She'll be teaching a series of classes taking place for four weeks, either on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. – noon, Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 9 p.m., or a Saturday workshop on Sept. 25. Tuition for evening or morning classes $110 ($100 member). Workshop fee is $80 ($72 member). Package rate for all three venues is $260. Please bring a bagged lunch for the all day workshop.

Come to the “A Dulcimer Weekend” and learn how to make a fretted dulcimer and then how to play it. The fretted dulcimer is a 16th-century folk music instrument with Scandinavian origins, tuned in fifths. Essentially anyone, with a bit of instruction in tuning and strumming, can play the fretted dulcimer.

The workshops, held Saturday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Making the Fretted Dulcimer) and Sunday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. (Playing the Fretted Dulcimer), will be presented by Nils R. Caspersson. The workshops will be geared for individuals who can then take the workshop information home and play their own fretted dulcimers. Tuition for both days is $45 or with your own dulcimer $35. A fee of $25 either day. Children under 15 accompanied by parent are free.

The Book Club meets the first Friday of the month at 10 a.m. Please call for the latest book assignment. Free and open to all who enjoy a great discussion.

Bridge anyone? A group of players would like to meet on a regular basis. Give a call if you'd like to join.

All of these events take place at the Barn, located overlooking Canandaigua Lake at 5323 Seneca Point Road, Canandaigua, N.Y. 14424. Please check out the Web site for further details at Or call at (585) 396-5950 for a brochure.
