The Geneva Theatre Guild Youth Theatre will hold auditions and registration for their summer program from 4 to 6:30 p.m., June 7 and 8, at North Street School, Geneva. The production, the popular musical “Once on This Island,” will be directed by award winning local director Pam Rapoza, with musical direction by Chris Sauter.
Young people, currently in the fourth through 12th grades, may register either day and should bring a photograph of themselves and a copy of their summer schedule. Those who wish to perform should expect to do a short audition which will include acting, singing and moving. No preparation is necessary and participation is free.
“Once on This Island” is the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a prince from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death. The catchy, contemporary, and Caribbean flavored score by the Tony Award winning song writing team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (“Ragtime,” “Seussical” and the animated film “Anastasia”) includes tender ballads and rousing dance numbers.
The Geneva Theatre Guild Youth Theatre is a summer theatre program founded in 1986. The purpose is to provide local youth with an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of a theatrical production and to provide the community with theatre that is artistically and educationally challenging.
Performances of Once on This Island will be at The Smith Opera House, 82 Seneca Street, Geneva, at 7 p.m. July 28 and 29.
