Big Band benefit planned at The Smith

GENEVA — In an effort to accommodate those unable to get tickets to the annual “Medley of Tastes,” the Smith Opera House will hold a second food and wine fund-raising event, “Swing Under the Stars,” Oct. 15 at the historic theatre.

Like June's Medley, at Houghton House on the HWS campus, the fall event will feature foods and wines from Finger Lakes restaurants and wineries, served throughout the restored theatre. The evening will be topped off by a concert by the Gap Mangione Big Band.

A silent auction and raffle are also planned, and The Smith will that evening kick off its new “Adopt-a-Star” program, inviting supporters to adopt one (or more) of the stars in the auditorium’s ceiling.

The 14-member band includes Mangione on the piano and Steve Gadd on the drums in addition to trumpets, trombones, saxophones and a vocal section. The band takes a traditional Big Band sound and adds touches of jazz, Latin, and rock.

In 1968 Mangione released his first solo album, “Diana in the Autumn,” which was recently reissued in CD format. “Ardis,” his latest piano CD, includes seven solo piano tracks — from piano trios to pianos with strings and pianos with brass.

Tickets to “Swing Under the Stars” are $45 each or $75 per couple; dinner starts at 6 p.m. and will be limited to 400 patrons. The concert starts at 8; concert-only tickets are $20 and $10, and are now available at the box office on Seneca Street.
