The film version of “Rent,” formerly a Broadway musical, will open Friday, Feb. 10 at the Smith Opera House in downtown Geneva.
This adaptation of the play has been called “exuberant, sexy and life affirming in equal measure.” Part of the success in taking stylized action to real locations works because six of the eight actor-performers from Broadway — including Jesse L. Martin and Taye Diggs — return for the movie version.
These actors know their roles down to the grit in their fingernails, so the film feels loose and real, unfettered by a proscenium and opened up in an almost spiritual way. And most importantly, the electrifying music still rules.
“Rent” will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12.
In addition, a “sing-along screening” is planned for 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, where those whose familiarity with the score and exuberance shouldn't be “shushed.”
This musical drama is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 2:15; tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens and will be available at the door.
