Benson, who majored in writing and rhetoric with a concentration in journalism and minored in philosophy, is learning the ropes of the sports newsroom, which is “literally a dream come true,” he says. “When I was a kid, I would watch ESPN on Saturday mornings instead of cartoons. I’ve loved watching sports my whole life. There is not a moment here that I take for granted.”
A member of the Hobart golf team, Benson developed his background in sports journalism as a student, both with ESPN in Ithaca, as well as an intern with Cornell University’s men’s hockey team. Meanwhile, as a student, he served as vice president, president and coach of the Hobart club hockey team, volunteered as a firefighter in Geneva and worked as a resident assistant and a tour guide for the HWS Office of Admissions.
The ESPN Ithaca internship experience was crucial, he says, because “it’s a competitive market.” But during his four years at HWS, Benson “worked extremely hard to build a network that could get me a foot in the door.”
