Campus update – April 12, 2021 – Hobart and William Smith Colleges \

April 12, 2021

Dear Members of the Hobart and William Smith Community,

During the past week, the Colleges administered 1067 COVID-19 tests of which 4 were positive, a .4% positivity rate. Most of the new positives this week related to students visiting family or family visiting students. Five students are in quarantine, two students are in isolation, and six people are considered to have recovered since last week. All students are scheduled to leave quarantine or isolation by Wednesday.

In contrast to our relative success, during the past week cases have been increasing in Ontario County and the Finger Lakes Region. This fact, coupled with the origin of most new cases during the week, underscores the need for all members of our community to follow public health guidance regarding face coverings and social distancing, as well as the Colleges’ guidance about travel and gatherings.

Thank you to the more than 50% of our students who responded to our interest survey about a possible vaccination clinic on-campus. We continue to work the Ontario County Public Health department to schedule a clinic on campus and will provide an update as soon as possible. We encourage everyone to become vaccinated as soon as possible to protect each other and our families. Students interested in this opportunity should still schedule an alternative appointment through the New York State vaccine website, Wegmans (and other local pharmacies), or another source, and then cancel that appointment if we are able to host a clinic here.

Finally, we encourage all members of our community to continue to demonstrate the respect and care for one another that has brought us so far through this very challenging academic year. Despite the anxieties and uncertainties we all shared in August, it is this ethos of care for each other that has allowed us to continue in-person education. We are confident that with this continued effort we will successfully complete these final three weeks of classes as well as reading period, finals period, senior week and Commencement.

Sincerely,

Mary Coffey
Provost and Dean of Faculty
