Dear Members of the Hobart and William Smith Community,
During the past week, the Colleges administered 946 COVID-19 tests of which 1 was positive, a .1% positivity rate. As of today, one person is in isolation and two people are in quarantine, with all scheduled to be released by the end of this week.
Our current low rate of infection on campus stands in continued contrast to several other local colleges. This underscores the need to continue to follow public health guidance, and we reiterate our encouragement for all members of the community to become vaccinated. As of this morning, about 76.2% of Hobart and William Smith faculty and staff report being fully vaccinated. We ask employees to share vaccination status when they have completed their course through the COVID-19 vaccination tracker so that the Colleges can follow progress and consider the need for further clinics. More than 50% of students have received at least one dose, and we ask students to upload final vaccination proof on the MyHousing portal for similar tracking purposes. We will continue to assist students throughout the year who need vaccine appointments if they are unable to get them in their home communities.
This will be our last weekly update for the semester. Random testing will continue through this week and then be suspended. Seniors remaining on campus for Commencement-related activities will be notified about testing requirements during senior week. The campus dashboard will be discontinued once the last cases for the semester are resolved. The Colleges will continue to provide daily data to the New York State tracking site until that requirement ends. Fall semester safety requirements, based on New York State and CDC guidance, will be shared before the beginning of the fall semester. Residential Life will be in touch with students who remain on campus for all or part of the summer about safety requirements and testing.
As President Jacobsen shared when we began in August of 2020, the creativity required and knowledge gained by our perseverance during a global pandemic highlight the most tangible application of a liberal arts education that any of us have witnessed. The last year has been a profound shared experience, and we believe that we will all be able to better serve one another and meet future challenges with the confidences gained during the 2020-2021 academic year at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Although there remains much work ahead to ensure that everyone across the globe is vaccinated, we look forward to a better future.
We offer our most sincere thanks and gratitude to all members of the community, and wish you all well as the semester concludes.
