Campus update – March 22, 2021 – Hobart and William Smith Colleges \

March 22, 2021

Dear Members of the Hobart and William Smith Community,

During the past week, the Colleges administered 834 COVID-19 tests of which two were positive (one student and one employee), a .2% positivity rate. As of this morning, one student is in travel-related quarantine and two students are in isolation. Two people are considered to have recovered since last week.

As access to COVID-19 vaccinations increases, we are pleased that increasingly many members of our community are fully or partially vaccinated. Information about local vaccination clinics can be found on the Ontario County website and the Finger Lakes vaccine hub.

As we shared last week, the Centers for Disease Control have issued updated guidance for persons who have been fully vaccinated. In addition, we are aware that New York State has updated travel guidance for those who have been fully vaccinated which is to begin April 2, 2021. Given the residential nature of our campus, as well as continued prevalence in the Northeast and recent increases in reported cases at several colleges and universities, the Colleges will continue to require that students limit travel away from campus, and that students who are away for more than 24 hours continue to follow the current testing and quarantine requirements. Additional information for employees regarding vaccinations and travel will be distributed by Human Resources later today.

Although the CDC also updated its guidance regarding spacing in K-12 classrooms from six feet to three feet, guidance for colleges and universities did not change. We are very fortunate to have adequate space on our campus to continue to use the current 6 feet standard for spacing of students and faculty in classrooms.

Our collective efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 are working. With continued use of PPE, continued adherence to social distancing requirements, and more members of our community receiving the vaccine, we can move forward with increased confidence and optimism as we enter spring season at the Colleges.

Sincerely,

Mary Coffey
Provost and Dean of Faculty
