Dear Members of the Hobart and William Smith Community,
Since August 1, the total number of COVID-19 cases at the Colleges is 34, with 26 of those now considered recovered. We currently have 50 students in quarantine and isolation, down from more than 100 a week ago. Today, we are reporting no new cases. While the numbers remain low, we continue to see positive cases of COVID-19 emerging from small gatherings where students are not using face coverings or adhering to social distancing protocols. This is happening at off-campus locations, and the four new cases reported on Saturday and Sunday are from two groups of students who interacted at one social gathering without face coverings for extended periods. As we saw last week, no positive cases are connected to on-campus activities including classes, office hours, library use or meals.
We thank the many members of our community who have shared COVID-19 specific concerns with us by using the anonymous reporting form. The Colleges respond to these reports immediately, and unfortunately, we have needed to suspend several students for social gathering violations and for not following quarantine requirements. We will continue to take this stance so that we can protect the health and wellbeing of the entire community.
As we conclude the first third of the on-campus learning portion of the semester, we ask all members of the community to continue to follow health and safety measures. With sustained vigilance, we can control the spread of the virus.
