Hobart College sophomore Chase Carraway finished fourth in a field of 18 sailors at the 2019 LaserPerformacne Men’s Singlehanded Championships on the Santa Barbara Channel on Nov. 9 and Nov. 10. Carraway’s fourth place was Hobart’s best finish since Rob Crane ’09 was third in 2008.
On Saturday, 10 races were contested under sunny skies with a 7-10 knot breeze that built to 10-12 knots. The championship wrapped up on Sunday with four races in light and spotty conditions.
Racing was tightly contested throughout the weekend. The top four sailors finished the weekend separated by a mere five points. Carraway compiled 70 points on the weekend, missing the podium by one point. St. Mary’s College’s Leo Boucher won the Glen S. Foster Trophy as the national champion, finishing with 65 points. Carraway sat in seventh place at the end of Saturday with 66 points. He had seven top 10 finishes in the first 10 races, including a victory in the second race. Carraway made a charge up the leader board with a perfect Sunday. He won all four races contested.
Miami’s Richard McCann was second with 68 points and received the George Griswold Trophy. Coast Gurad’s Gage Schoenherr was third.
