Following tradition, the Caribbean Student Association (CSA) will host its annual Trip to the Tropics event celebrating Caribbean culture at the Colleges and in the greater Geneva community.
With a theme of “Moonlight Mixer,” this year’s event features Caribbean cuisine, live music and dance performances. Partnering with FLX Live! and the local restaurant “NTRIIG”: Caribbean Food and Juice Bar, the event will be held at FLX! Live on Saturday, Nov.10 from 7 to 9 p.m.
“Trip to the Tropics means a lot to me as it is a rare opportunity to showcase my culture with HWS,” says CSA Co-President Shaamar Samuel ’19. He is co-president alongside his twin sister Shaahida Samuel ’19, and their family is from Grenada.
Samuel says the CSA members wanted to hold the event downtown as way to get the Geneva community involved in the festivities.
“We truly hope that when others leave the event they are able to have a better understanding of what Caribbean culture looks, tastes and feels like,” says Samuel. “We hope all who participate become more interested in learning about the multiplicity of world cultures that exist throughout the world and even here at HWS and within the Geneva community.”
Shuttles will be available starting at 6 p.m. from the Hill, the Medbery lot and JPR. Tickets will be sold until the day of the event during lunch and dinner hours in the Scandling Campus Center. Tickets are $5 for HWS students and $10 for non-HWS students, faculty and staff. White colored attire is strongly encouraged.
Bi-weekly meetings for the CSA take place at the Intercultural Affairs House on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
