Day in the Life

Gianna Gonzalez ’20

Hi! My name is Gianna Gonzalez and I’m an English and media & society double major and music minor at Hobart and William Smith originally from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. I am a Residential Assistant (RA) for first year students, play club lacrosse and am actively engaged in student government. I am an intern for the Office of Communications and a student worker for the Student Engagement Center and Residential Education.

My typical Thursday (pre-coronavirus of course!) looks something like this:

8 a.m. – Wake up and get ready for the day.

8:45 a.m. – Walk to Au Bon Pain (ABP) to grab a coffee before my independent study meeting. Right now, I love getting an iced vanilla latte with almond milk.

9 a.m. – My first commitment of the day is my independent study meeting in the Music department with Professor Oliveri. This semester I am exploring the history of hip hop.

10 a.m. - I have a small break, so I usually head to ABP again. I typically buy a granola bar and catch up with my friend Thayer who likes to study on the first floor of the library. All of the different levels in the library have a different vibe and sound level.

10:30 a.m. – I go to my “Cool Chemistry” course. I am taking this course to fulfill my Scientific Inquiry goal. Even though chemistry isn’t my thing, I like this class because I get to learn about interesting topics such as climate

change, alcohol and caffeine’s effects on the brain, and nutrition.

12 p.m. – My next class is my favorite of the semester, “Global Musicals” with my advisor, Professor Rebecca Burditt. For homework we watched a French musical, “Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” and read complementary articles that argue that the film is an allegory for the French Algerian War.

1:30 p.m. - I eat lunch at The Café. If Denise is working at Tres Habaneros, I always get a chicken quesadilla with chipotle sauce and guacamole- she makes it the best! Working in The Café was my first work-study job on campus. I worked there for two semesters, so I always love visiting her.

2 p.m. – I work in the Office of Communications where I write articles about events, students’ accomplishments, or other happenings on campus. I get to learn many different facets of working in media.

4:15 p.m. – I head back to my room in Comstock Pondview. If any of my residents are in the common room, I usually take this time to check in with them and hang out. If there is no one there, I go into my room and

watch one episode of a sit-com. My favorite show right now is The Good Place.

5:30 p.m. – I get ready and go to a workout class in the Bristol Field House. I usually choose spin, barre or yoga.

6:45 p.m. – Dinner in Saga. My friends and I like to go a bit late to dinner to avoid the typical rush.

8 p.m. – Depending on the day, I might head to one of my friend’s rooms, the library, a student government meeting or Club Lacrosse practice. If I am tired from the day, I head back to my room. If my residents are in the common room when I get back, I will spend some time with them.

11:30 p.m. – My typical bedtime. I try to stretch as much study and free time into my nights as I can.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about academics or life on campus. Catch me at gianna.gonzalez@hws.edu any time.

My best — Gianna Gonzalez ’20
