The Emerson Society is a key component of the Colleges’ annual fundraising efforts, with members making HWS a priority in their philanthropy by giving $2,000 or more per year. This spring, committee members of the society were preparing for a new member drive — and then the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Committee co-chairs Anne Standish ’86, P’14, P’16 and Peter Standish Jr. ’83, P’14, P’16 are thrilled that the membership drive is back on track this fall. “While the preparations we made in March to connect with alums, parents and friends had to be put on pause, in October alone we reached out to more than 90 potential donors,” says Anne, noting that the committee will connect with another group in March. The fund year runs from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021.
The Emerson Society was established by the HWS Board of Trustees in 1978 as a way to encourage others to follow the example of the deeply devoted and generous William M. Emerson. Past president of the Auburn, N.Y. women’s shoe firm Dunn and McCarthy, he was a longtime member of the Board’s Executive Council, served for 10 years as chair of key HWS Board committees and contributed generously to the Colleges each year.
“We are deeply grateful to all of our Emerson Society donors, and especially to the membership committee for their continued leadership and passionate dedication to the Colleges,” says Vice President for Advancement Bob O’Connor P’21, P’23. “Recruiting new members will allow us to continue to secure important resources to help our students succeed.”
Along with the Standishes, members of the Emerson Society Committee include Gregory Brown ’91, Edward ’86 and Robin Savits Cooper ’87, P’16, Eleanor and Glenn Dorr P’23, Lynne Friedlander ’80, P’10, Nancy Nowak Rutherford ’71, Elaine Bruno Vukelic ’91 and Peter Wasserman ’87, P’17, P’20.
