PERSONAL STATEMENT
I embrace the idea of cultural studies in my work from the point of view that the traditional separate disciplines inform each other when viewed as a composite whole. Courses I teach, such as Russian Prison Literature, depend heavily on historical and social contexts. Likewise, my course on Russian folklore naturally extends into areas of art (both folk and "high"), music, theater, and literature. I hope that my students gain a sense of the larger picture of Russian culture from my classes, and are able to see the many ways their personal interests may take root in all things Russian.
