On Wednesday afternoons throughout the semester, the Cellar Pub will host the Spring 2017 Jazz n’ Guitar Series.
Guitarists Greg Wachala, director of the HWS Jazz Guitar Ensemble, and Steve Greene will open the series on Feb. 22. Wachala is a respected composer, producer and educator who has recorded with multi-platinum artist Jay Proctor and performed with Craig Shulman, the Oswego Opera and numerous ensembles within the rock, pop, jazz and heavy-metal genres. He has served as an instructor of jazz guitar at HWS since 2006. Greene is a guitar instructor and composer who writes for several modern dance companies. He has worked with the critically acclaimed Garth Fagen Dance and the Boston Dance Collective. They will perform again on April 19.
On March 29, Joe Chiappone will perform with Wachala. An accomplished guitarist and teacher, Chiappone owns the Pittsford-based retailer Northfield Music. He has played in clubs since the age of 18 and currently performs with the band Prime Time Funk.
On April 5, Rick Balestra, a guitar instructor at SUNY Oswego, Colgate University, Hamilton College and Syracuse University, will join Wachala. Balestra is an accomplished live performer, who has been a featured soloist with the Syracuse Symphony and Pops Orchestra, and played in the pit for the Syracuse Opera Company and other theater companies. A regular performer at jazz festivals throughout the state, Balestra performs regularly with his band Spaces and also helped found and direct the Jazz Guitar & More Festival at SUNY Oswego.
On April 26, Bob Sneider, an assistant professor of jazz guitar at the Eastman School of Music, will conclude the series. He has toured with two-time Grammy Award winner Chuck Mangione and performed in major festivals, concert halls and jazz clubs throughout South America, Central America, North America and Europe. Sneider has released several CDs that have received positive reviews and international airplay.
All performances will be held in the Cellar Pub from 12 – 1:30 p.m.
In addition, on Tuesday, April 11, Sneider will offer a workshop and masterclass with the HWS Jazz Guitar Ensemble in Room 119 of the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts.
