Writer, actress, consultant and advocate Jen Richards will visit HWS on Thursday, Feb. 23, to screen and discuss her critically-hailed series Her Story.
Richards co-wrote, starred in and produced Her Story, the first independent web series to receive an Emmy nomination. Her previous work includes the online storytelling project We Happy Trans, which compiles stories of people sharing their positive experiences of being transgender; the Trans 100 awards, which celebrates achievements in transgender activism; and regular appearances on Caitlyn Jenner’s docu-series I Am Cait.
Her Story is a six-part fictional, web series that examines the dating lives of trans and queer individuals as they navigate the intersections of desire identity. Produced by a predominately transgender cast and crew, and shot on a shoestring budget, Her Story garnered critical acclaim upon its release and received international attention for its surprise nomination in the “outstanding short-format-live-action entertainment program” in the 2016 Emmy Awards.
In addition to Her Story, Richards is the co-producer of the upcoming docu-series More Than T; writer of the accompanying Trans 102 Series; a 2016 Outfest Screenwriting Fellow for her feature script Any Given Week; and will appear in several upcoming projects, including CMT’s Nashville and CBS’ Doubt. Her essays have been published in numerous platforms, including the 2015 September/October cover story “What Trans Movement?” in The Advocate.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Geneva Room. A discussion will be held following the screening. The event is hosted by LGBT Studies and co-sponsored by Media and Society, Women’s Studies, and Intercultural Affairs.
