The William Smith College soccer team moved up five spots to No. 2 in the first United Soccer Coaches poll of the regular season. The Herons are 4-0-0 overall.
William Smith has earned wins over two teams that were nationally-ranked in the preseason poll to start the year. The Herons shut out then No. 5 Messiah 1-0 in Grantham, Pa. on Sept. 8 and opened the season with a 2-0 win over then No. 4 Hardin-Simmons. First-year goalie Amanda Kesler has played a majority of the minutes in goal for the Herons. She has stopped all five shots she has faced on her way to posting shutouts in her first three games.
On Wednesday, William Smith defeated Geneseo 3-0 on Cozzens Field. McQuillen factored into all three of the Herons’ goals, scoring the first goal and assisting on both second goals. William Smith used a strong defensive effort to limit the Knights, who came into the game averaging 19 shots per game, to just four shots.
The Herons will welcome Rochester to Cozzens Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
