Herons Clinch Liberty League Title

WS Lax vs UofR2The William Smith College lacrosse team defeated Rochester 13-0 in a Liberty League contest on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this afternoon. With the win, the Herons have now won their last 12 straight games and are 14-2 overall and 9-0 in Liberty League play.

The Herons’ win combined with losses from Ithaca and Skidmore this weekend, clinched the regular season title for William Smith.

Sophomore Kelsey Williams led the way for the Herons with a career-high five points on four goals and an assist. Fellow Sophomore Anna Murphy also had a hat trick. In addition, Williams had a strong day in the draw circle, notching three victories. First-year Kelsie Worth scooped up a game-high five ground balls and sophomores Mekayla Montgomery and Sadie Mapstoneeach had three caused turnovers. Sophomore Olivia Hofmann made six saves as she recorded her first career shutout.

Carlie Bendavid had eight saves in goal for the Yellowjackets (5-9, 2-7). Four different players grabbed a ground ball for Rochester.

WS Lax vs UofR1Following a sloppy start to the game, sophomore Ellie Burns accepted a feed from sophomore Rachel Yackel and bounced a shot past Bendavid for her 46th goal of the year. Junior Rachel Slagle scored an unassisted goal to extend the lead to 2-0. It was her 12th goal of the season. Two minutes later, Williams beat a defender and fired a shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the game. The unassisted goal was her seventh of the season. Murphy gave William Smith a four goal lead with her 20th tally of the season. Slagle was credited with an assist on the goal. With 5:28 remaining in the half, junior Nicki Santora fired home her first goal of the game and 23rd strike of the season. The woman-up goal was assisted by Burns. Burns gave William Smith a 6-0 lead going into the break. Her team leading 47th goal of the season was an unassisted goal.

Williams opened the half with a pair of goals in the first 45 seconds of the second half. She bounced a shot past Bendavid for her eighth goal of the season. Williams completed the hat trick 10 seconds later. Both goals were unassisted. Santora notched her second woman-up goal of the game with 25:08 remaining in regulation. Williams was credited with an assist on the goal. Murphy added her 21st goal of the season one minute later. First-year Payton McMahonwas credited with an assist on the goal. Williams gave the Herons an 11-0 lead with her fourth goal of the game. Sophomore Delia Lawver was credited with an assist on the goal. Lawver pocketed her 12th goal of the season two minutes later. Murphy wrapped up the scoring with her third goal of the game. Lawver was credited with an assist on the goal.

The Herons dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Rochester 30-12 and won the ground ball battle 23-13. The Yellowjackets held an edge at the draw circle, winning 9-of-15. William Smith was 18-of-23 clearing the ball and Rochester was 16-of-26.

The Herons will conclude their regular season next Saturday, April 27, when they head to Skidmore. Opening draw in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. is scheduled for 4 p.m.
