The No. 27 William Smith squash team defeated No. 45 Smith this morning 9-0 to wrap up the 2020 Pioneer Invitational. The Herons improve to 10-3 overall this season.
First-year Marcela Marquez Martinez continued her winning streak after defeating Emma Westgate at No. 1 for her fifth straight win. Senior Gabby Fraser improved her season record to 9-2 with a win over Mieko Kuramoto 11-2, 11-1, 11-4 in the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, junior Jo Pacheco earned her seventh win this season when she defeated Naimah John-Charles 11-2, 11-1, 11-4. First-year Talia Welker won at No. 4, 11-0, 11-2, 11-2. Sophomore Molly Wachter recorded a win at No. 5 in three games. Senior Djeneba Ballo earned a win 11-4, 11-2, 11-5 at No. 6. First-year Erin Griffis and classmate Maia Dreishpoon earned wins in three games at Nos. 7 and 8 respectively. Senior Karina Lazaro defeated Heidi Corneau at No. 9.
The Herons will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 31 when they host Colby at the Smith Squash Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
