The William Smith College soccer team was named a United Soccer Coaches College Team Academic Award winner for the 2019-20 academic year. This is the second straight year the Herons have earned this award.
William Smith is one of 556 women’s teams to earn the award. To be eligible, a team must have a combined grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The 32 Herons on last fall’s roster earned a cumulative GPA of 3.34. It’s the ninth time William Smith has earned the award since it was instituted in 1996.
In 2019, William Smith finished the season with a 21-2-1 overall record and was ranked second in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. The Herons produced a 17-match win streak that propelled them all the way to the national championship game. William Smith was 9-0-0 mark in the Liberty League and captured its 13th straight conference regular season and tournament titles. Three Herons were named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America teams, highlighted by Maialen Martinez, who was named the Scholar Player of the Year.
