The William Smith College lacrosse team was picked to finish in first place in the Liberty League in the 2020 women’s lacrosse coaches poll.
The Herons, who are four-time defending Liberty League Champions, received 100 points and 10 first place votes.
Ithaca, William Smith’s opponent in the last two Liberty League championship games, was voted second with 91 points and received one first place vote. Clarkson was third with 77 points and Skidmore was fourth with 73 points. Vassar was voted fifth with 59 points and Rensselaer was selected sixth with 54 points. RIT (53), Union (39), Rochester (27), St. Lawrence (22), and Bard (10) rounded out the field.
The Herons were ranked No. 15 in the IWLCA preseason poll and 10th in the USLacrosse Magazine preseason poll. William Smith returns its top eight scorers from last year’s squad that was 17-3 overall and a perfect 10-0 in Liberty League play. Junior attack Ellie Burns is William Smith’s top returning point getter from last year. She had 53 goals and 12 assists for 65 points. Burns added 28 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Junior Anna Murphy will play an important role in the midfield for the Herons this season. She had 44 points on 29 goals and 15 assists last year. Murphy added 28 ground balls, 17 caused turnovers and 33 draw controls. A first team All-Liberty League selection, junior Ellen Arena anchors a defense that ranked 17th in the nation in scoring defense (7.1 gpg). She had 55 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers. Junior Olivia Hofmann is back after registering a 6.87 goals against average and a .525 save percentage. The first team All-Liberty League selection was 11-1 in goal last season.
William Smith begins the 2020 season two weeks from today on Feb. 26 when it travels to Geneseo for a non-league game. The season opener is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Three days later, the Herons will make their Boswell Field debut when they host Oswego on Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. William Smith will open Liberty League play on March 14 at noon against the Thoroughbreds.
