The William Smith College lacrosse team moved up two spots to No. 15 in the latest Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll. In addition, the Herons are receiving votes in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine poll.
The Herons are 0-1 after dropping their season opener to then No. 11 St. John Fisher on Saturday. A defensive battle, the Cardinals prevailed 7-6 at Growney Stadium. Three different players had two points for William Smith, seniors Ellie Burns (2g) and Anna Murphy (2a) and sophomore Maddie Montgomery (2g). First-year Maddie Bamberger started in goal and made nine saves finishing with a .563 save percentage in her collegiate debut.
The Herons will be back in action this weekend when they open Liberty League play against Rochester. William Smith will be at Fauver Stadium on Friday, March 26 at 4 p.m. The Yellowjackets will make the return trip to Boswell Field on Saturday, March 27, at 6 p.m.
Rochester is 2-0 after knocking off D’Youville and Nazareth to begin its season. Mary Panepento (5g, 3a), Emily Voss (5g, 3a) and Lucy Haggerty (3g, 5a) share the team lead with eight points each. Nikki Nanis leads the team with seven caused turnovers and Grace Crochiere has scooped up a team best seven ground balls. Carlie Bendavid has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 2-0 with a 3.54 GAA and a .696 save percentage.
