Herons No. 1 Advance to Championship

The top-seeded William Smith College soccer team will face No. 3 seed Rensselaer in the Liberty League tournament championship game on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. on Cozzens Field.

The Herons are undefeated this season, and are seeking their 10th straight Liberty League tournament title. William Smith is making its 15th consecutive appearance in the Liberty League tournament championship game. The Herons topped Union 5-0 in their semifinal game to earn their spot in the title match.

William Smith ranks fifth in the nation in assists per game (3.18) and points per game (11.06). The Herons are also seventh in goals against average (0.24) and scoring offense (3.94).  Senior Kara Shue leads the team with 34 points on 11 goals and 12 assists. She ranks 12th in Division III in assists and 13th in assists per game (0.71). Sophomore goalie Veronica Romines leads the nation with a 0.08 goals against average and ranks fifth with a .938 save percentage.

RPI brings a 14-4-1 record to Geneva. The Engineers are making their first ever appearance in the Liberty League tournament championship game. Rensselaer earned the right to play for the championship, topping No. 2 seed Vassar 1-0 in their semifinal game.

RPI ranks 14th in the country in save percentage (.907) and 22nd in goals against average (0.41). Emily Kaplan leads the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Joey Lyons is sporting a 0.42 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. She ranks 21st in Division III in save percentage.

The Herons earned a 1-0 victory over RPI in their regular season meeting on Oct. 1, in Troy, N.Y. Senior Brie Ruane notched the game-winning goal off an assist from Shue 15:03 into the match.
