The William Smith College soccer team continued its climb in the national polls this week. The Herons moved up to No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the D3soccer.com poll, receiving two first place votes.
William Smith (11-1-1, 7-0-0) extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of 1-0 wins this past weekend. On Friday, the Herons defeated Rensselaer on an 81st minute goal from senior Emilie Sauvayre. The next day, William Smith celebrated Senior Day, clinching a Liberty League Tournament spot with a win over Union. Junior Julia Keogh scored her first goal of the season in the ninth minute to secure the victory. The Herons limited the Engineers and Dutchwomen to four combined shots.
Entering the week, William Smith ranks among the nation’s best in goals against average (5th, 0.30), shutout percentage (11th, .692) and winning percentage (14th, .885). The Herons have recorded a Liberty League best nine shutouts in 13 games this season and allowed a league-low four goals.
Offensively, William Smith has relied on its depth this season with 16 players having at least one goal. Juniors Sheila McQuillen and Mariah Deschino lead the charge with three goals each. Five other players have scored two goals. In addition to her three goals, McQuillen has three assists to lead the team with nine points. Sophomore Amanda Kesler has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 11-1-1 with a 0.30 GAA and a .862 save percentage with eight shutouts. Kesler is seventh in the nation in GAA.
The Herons begin a three-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 26, when they take on Bard in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The Raptors are 3-11-1 overall and 0-7-0 in conference play. Bard is coming off a 1-0 loss to St. Lawrence last Saturday. Alina Augustin leads the team with eight points on three goals and two assists. Abigail Stanley has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 2-8-1 with a 2.67 GAA and a .744 save percentage.
Saturday’s game will be the eighth all-time meeting between William Smith and Bard. The Herons lead the all-time series 7-0-0, including a 3-0-0 mark in Annandale-on-Hudson.
On Sunday, William Smith will take on Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y., at 1 p.m. The Knights enter the week with a 6-8-0 overall record. Mt. St. Mary will take on Purchase and Farmingdale St. on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. The Knights are led by Chrissy Cannellla who has 32 points on 15 goals and two assists. Cyan Scott has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She has a 1.75 GAA and a .687 save percentage.
Sunday’s game will be the second meeting between the Herons and the Knights. William Smith won the first meeting 2-0 on Oct. 25, 2015.
