The William Smith College soccer team moved up three spots to No. 2 in the first United Soccer Coaches poll of the regular season. In addition, the Herons are ranked third in the first D3soccer.com poll of the season after starting the year with three straight wins.
William Smith knocked off two teams that were ranked in the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll to open its season. The Herons shutout then No. 10 Hardin-Simmons in their opener and blanked then No. 7 Messiah 2-0 on Cozzens Field last Saturday, Sept. 7. William Smith is tied with 23 other teams in Division III with a 0.00 goals against average and a 1.000 save percentage.
Junior Maialen Martinez and first-year Seneca Blakely-Armitage are tied for the team lead with two goals and four points each. They have accounted for all three of William Smith’s game-winning goals this season. Sophomore Amanda Kesler has played every minute in goal this season. She is 3-0-0 with three shutouts. Kesler has stopped all seven shots she has faced.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when it travels to take on Geneseo in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m. The Knights bring a 3-1-0 record into this week. Domenica Piccoli leads the team with three goals and seven points. Julia McDonald has played every minute in goal and is 3-1-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a .733 save percentage.
Saturday’s meeting will be the 27th matchup between William Smith and Geneseo. The Herons hold a 16-8-2 lead in the series including a 6-4-0 mark in Geneseo.
