The William Smith College lacrosse team was ranked No. 15 in the nation in the final IWLCA Division III poll of the year. The Herons were ranked in every poll of the season, peaking at No. 13.
William Smith finished the year with a 17-3 overall record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. It was the Herons’ 20th overall and fourth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. William Smith was 10-0 in Liberty League play and captured the conference regular season and tournament titles for the fourth straight season.
The Herons finished the year 17th in the nation in scoring defense (7.10). Sophomore goalie Olivia Hofmann ranked eighth in the nation in goals against average (6.87) and 18th in save percentage (.525).
Sophomore Ellie Burns led the team with 53 goals and 12 assists for 65 points. Her 53 goals are tied 12th on William Smith’s single-season list and her 65 points were tied for 24th. Burns was just the 18th Heron to score 50 or more goals in a season. For the second straight year, sophomore defender Mekayla Montgomery led the team in draws, ground balls and caused turnovers. Her 93 draws were a William Smith season record and her 46 caused turnovers were four off the Heron single season record. Montgomery’s 62 ground balls are tied for 10th on the single season list.
William Smith’s 17 wins are the second most in a season in program history. The Herons’ 374 points and 119 assists ranked eighth, their 255 goals are 10th. William Smith’s 212 caused turnovers were fifth and the 231 draws are 11th. The Herons’ 7.10 goals against average ranked 10th.
