Hip Hobart, Forever!

The Hobart College Bicentennial Kick-Off Celebration will be hosted at Trinity Wall Street in New York City, the home church of the College’s founder, Bishop John Henry Hobart, with an address from the Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church, The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry’75, D.D.’20.

The Hobart College Bicentennial Celebration will kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11 at Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City, the home and final resting place of the College’s namesake, Episcopal Bishop John Henry Hobart. Special guest speaker for the event is The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry ’75, D.D. ’20, the Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church, who is an alumnus and serving as Honorary Chair of the Hobart Bicentennial.

Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, the event will be live streamed. Registration is required.

“As we kick off a year of celebrating Hobart College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges, it is fitting that we do so at Trinity Church where Bishop Hobart first envisioned establishing a college and which is the final resting place for the man whose foresight made it happen,” says President Joyce P. Jacobsen, who will offer an address at the event and introduce Bishop Curry. Opening remarks will be offered by Chair of the Hobart and William Smith Board of Trustees Craig R. Stine ’81, P’17 and the alma mater will be sung by Trustee Garrett A. Mathieson ’74.

“This celebration could not be a more fitting way to honor Hobart’s Episcopal heritage with remarks from one who we proudly call our own. Bishop Curry graduated from Hobart College in 1975 and now leads the worldwide Episcopal congregation, serving as the first African-American to hold the Church’s top leadership,” Jacobsen says.

Granted a charter in 1822, Hobart College is among the 50 oldest colleges and universities in the United States. Today, Hobart and William Smith are future-focused, liberal arts and sciences institution led by a faculty of accessible teachers and scholars known for the impact of their research and distinguished by the depth of their mentorship. To best prepare students for impact and success, the Colleges nurture intellectual, professional and ethical development. Students benefit from Hobart and William Smith’s location on the edge of Seneca Lake which serves as a classroom, a destination and a reminder of each individual’s endless potential.

Throughout 2022, the Hobart College Bicentennial commemoration will feature an array of events ranging from guest speakers, awards and presentations culminating in October 2022 with a Gala Celebration on campus.

The theme of the Hobart Bicentennial – Hip, Hobart, Forever! – comes directly from the alma mater, first performed in 1900 by the Hobart Glee Club after Professor C.J. Rose, class of 1876, composed the music and Edward John Cook, class of 1895, wrote the lyrics. It’s a reminder, always, to celebrate Hobart College and to do everything possible to honor the past as we build an even better future.
