HWS Hosts Peace Corps Panel

The Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning will host a panel discussion with Hobart and William Smith alums who have recently returned from volunteering with the Peace Corps.

On Tuesday, March 2, the Center for Community Engagement & Service-Learning will host a virtual Peace Corps event with four HWS alums from the Classes of 2017. The event will be held on Zoom from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

The alums include:

Carl Weiss ’17 and Lucie Mendelson ’17 who both taught Spanish literacy to elementary students in different towns in the Dominican Republic. While serving, Weiss also organized a soccer team in the community. Mendelson taught sex education to young girls and formed a co-ed dominos league. At Hobart and William Smith, Weiss studied international relations and Hispanic Studies. Mendelson double majored in sociology and educational studies. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in special education at American University.

Emily Spraggs ’17 served in central Botswana on projects that supported youths living with HIV and preventing the spread of HIV. The work built off the individual major “Global Health” that she developed at HWS. She also traveled to the capitol city of Garbarone to work with the UNICEF Adolescent Care Project and develop Young Adult Support Groups, and she coached a girls’ soccer team. In May, Spraggs will enter a doctorate of nursing practice degree program with a pediatrics primary care focus.

Mary Kubinski ’17 worked with teachers in Thailand to develop teaching methods and increase English skills for students. She created lessons for students with diverse learning abilities and organized two English camps for more than 100 students. At HWS, Kubinski double majored in political science and public policy and minored in Africana studies. She is currently working on a master’s degree in public policy and management at Carnegie Mellon University.
