After outstanding performances by the Hobart and William Smith sailing teams at the MAISA fall championships, both teams have qualified for nationals. HWS will compete at the ICSA Match Race National Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 17-20 and the Herons will compete in the Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship at the College of Charleston on Nov. 11-13.
The HWS team of Noah Barrengos ‘18, Sam Hallowell ‘17, Greiner Hobbs ‘18 and Maya Weber ’20, worked together to win the Colleges’ first MAISA Match Race Championship in Kings Point, N.Y., and secured their place in the San Diego races. Through heavy winds that ranged between 18-30 knots, the team was able to complete one round robin and the semifinal knockout round with a 5-2 overall record – and claimed the 16th conference championship for the HWS sailing team.
Meanwhile, in Norfolk, Va., the Heron sailors finished third in the MAISA Women’s Fall Championship and solidified their place in the Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship in Charleston, N.C. Christine Moloney ‘17, Erin Condon ‘17, Bailey Carter ‘19, Emily Lorimer ‘20, Kate Cox ‘20 and Sinead McManus ’20 had nine top-five finishes, including a pair of wins.
Lorimer, a first year on the team this year, says the effort the team has made, “in the gym and on the water” can be seen in their results. She also believes their performance thus far is just a sneak peek at what they can accomplish in the championships.
