HWS Squash Teams Compete in Nationals

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges squash teams will each send two players to this weekend’s College Squash Association Individual National Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. Senior Gabby Fraser and first-year Marcela Marquez Martinez will represent the Herons and junior Quinn Udy and first-year Giacomo Dalle Molle will represent the Statesmen.

University of Pennsylvania will host the tournament, which starts tomorrow, March 6. The top 16 players in the country will compete for the national championship, with the men competing for the Pool Trophy and the women playing for the Ramsay Trophy.

Fraser will compete in the Holleran West bracket. She will open the tournament tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Princeton’s  Morgan Steelman. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals and the loser will play in the consolation draw. They will take on either Bowdoin’s Caroline Glaser or Columbia’s Nicole Kendall. Marquez Martinez will compete in the Holleran South bracket. She will face the Lions’ Cynthia Cao at 9:40 a.m. tomorrow. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals and the loser will play in the consolation draw. In the second match, they will take on either Amherst’s Lauren Weil or Tigers’ Grace Doyle.

Fraser is a team-best 16-3 overall this season, and holds a 10-2 mark in the No. 2 spot. Marquez Martinez made an instant impact when she joined the roster in January, winning ten consecutive matches. She holds a 12-1 mark this season. Fraser was named the Liberty League Player of the Week four times this season, and Marquez Martinez was named the league’s Rookie of the Week four times as well.

Udy will compete in the Molloy East bracket. His first match is at 12:10 p.m. Friday against Navy’s Jonathan Lentz. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals in the main draw while the loser will play in the consolation draw. They will take on either Tuft’s Raghav Kumar or Penn’s Saksham Choudhary. Dalle Molle is still on the waitlist.

Udy leads the Statesmen with a 12-5 overall record. He is 10-8 in the No. 1 spot, and was named the Liberty League Player of the Week once. Dalle Molle holds the Statesmen’s best record in the No. 2 spot (5-4) and is 6-6 this season after joining the roster in January. Dalle Molle was named the league’s Rookie of the Week after his performance at the CSA Team National Championships.
