British singer and songwriter Jay Sean, best known for his debut single “Down” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was ranked the ninth best-selling single of 2009, headlined the HWS Welcome Back Concert on Saturday.
Hobart student rapper “Izzy” (Israel Oyedapo ’20) was chosen by the Concert Advisory Committee to open the show for Sean. Izzy has released several singles on the music streaming platform Soundcloud, including his newest single “Better Things.” Izzy was joined by several other student performers, including rapper “Fat Moody” (Mudia Onaiwu ’22), Eros Cabrera ’19, Coron Broomfield ’20 and “DJ” (Stephen Graham ’20).
In 2009, BBC reported that Sean became, “The Most Successful Male U.K. Urban Artist in U.S. Chart History.” His single “Down” featured best-selling hip hop artist Lil Wayne and was produced by J-Remy and Bobby Mass. The single has been certified Platinum in multiple countries and Sean was also named the 35th most popular artist in Billboard’s Hot 100 Artists of 2009. Sean has four studio albums, with three certified silver by the British Recorded Music Industry and his debut certified five times Platinum by The Indian Music Industry.
Sean was selected as this year’s performer by the Concert Advisory Committee, which is comprised of a group of student leaders. The committee selected Sean after conducting two surveys of the student body on genre and artist preferences. The event was sponsored in conjunction with the Campus Activities Board and held in the Robert A. Bristol ’31 Field House.
