The Asian Student Union (ASU) will host a semi-formal dinner and dance in celebration of the Lunar New Year in Bartlett Theatre from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. HWS student performers will be joined this year by members of three clubs from Cornell University, and the event will be catered by Wing Tai Restaurant.
In many Asian cultures, the Lunar New Year is one of the most important and frequently celebrated holidays. The event provides a change of pace for people, as they take time to reflect on the past year and rest before the start of another busy year.
Club President Sara Devault-Feldman ’17 says she has been inspired by the event each year and believes that hosting the celebration makes a difference for students, particularly those who are not able to travel home to see their families.
“The Lunar New Year was one of the first large ASU events that I attended and helped work on as a first-year student at HWS. I had a great time then, so I feel very happy that I am able to help continue this tradition for ASU and the campus community,” she says, stressing students of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
Devault-Feldman also urges students to join ASU meetings every other Monday from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the Office of Intercultural Affairs Center. The next meeting will be held Feb. 6. ”The meetings are relaxed and participants can talk about whatever they wish in a safe environment,” she says.
Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for faculty, staff and community members and will be available at the door.
