Marquez Martinez Named Player of the Year

William Smith first-year Marcela Marquez Martinez was named the Liberty League Women’s Squash Player of the Year as announced by the conference office. Marquez Martinez was also named the league’s Rookie of the Year, and earned a spot on the all-league team. Head Coach Pat Cosquer was tabbed the Coach of the Year.

Senior Gabby Fraser, junior Jo Pacheco, and sophomore Molly Wachter joined Marquez Martinez on the all-league team. First-year Erin Griffis garnered all-league honorable mention.

Marquez Martinez made an instant impact when she joined the roster in January. She cruised to 10 straight wins, and ended the season with five consecutive Liberty League Rookie of the Week awards. Marquez Martinez led the Herons with an 11-1 record in the No. 1 spot, and recorded 13 wins overall this season. She was the only Heron to win a match against then No. 16 Amherst when she defeated Daksha Pathak 12-10, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6 in the No. 1 spot.

Marquez Martinez went 3-0 in the No. 1 spot at the Liberty League Championships, leading the Herons to their first league title since 2006. At the CSA Team National Championships, Marquez Martinez went 2-1 at No. 1. She competed at the CSA Individual Championships in the Holleran South Draw and advanced to the consolation semifinals.

A five-time Liberty League Player of the Week, Fraser had a team-best overall record of 17-5. She held a 10-2 mark in the No. 2 spot, and began an eight-match win streak in late January. Fraser went 3-0 at the Liberty League Championships, and 2-1 at the CSA Team National Championships. Fraser wrapped up her season at the CSA Individual Championships. She competed in the Holleran West Draw and advanced to the consolation semifinals.

A Liberty League Performer of the Week, Pacheco led the Herons in the No. 3 spot, posting a 10-2 record, and tallying an overall record of 13-4. She won both of her matches at the Liberty League Championships, and posted a 2-1 record at the CSA Individual Championships.

Wachter ended the season with a 12-9 record. She held a 5-6 mark in the No. 4 spot and was 4-3 in the No. 5 spot. Wachter was 2-1 at the Liberty League Championships.

A Liberty League Rookie of the Week, Griffis compiled an 11-9 record this season. She went 2-1 at the league championships and won her last match of the season against Hamilton at the CSA National Championships.

In his first season with the Herons, Cosquer led William Smith to a league title for the first time in 14 years. The Herons ended the season ranked No. 23 by the CSA. The Herons ended their season with a 16-5 overall record, which is the most wins since 2015-16 when they ended their season with 17.
