Fred Matt ’81, president of the fourth-generation brewery F.X. Matt Brewing Co., reflects on the family business, its longevity and effective management in the Syracuse Post-Standard’s weekly series on leadership.
The Syracuse Post-Standard’s weekly “Conversation on Leadership” series recently featured Fred Matt ’81, president of the fourth-generation brewery F.X. Matt Brewing Co. The company, started by Matt’s great-grandfather in 1888, made the first beer after the repeal of Prohibition and has been an innovative player in the craft beer movement.
In the interview, Matt reflects on the company’s history, its moments of struggle, growth and innovation, and the leadership lessons he’s learned that make for effective organizations and invested employees.
Matt, an economics major and English and history minor at HWS, earned a graduate degree from Simon Business School at the University of Rochester and worked in advertising before joining the family business in 1989.
