13 September 2018 Sept. 11 Remembered
To commemorate the victims of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Hobart and William Smith honored the victims, as well as their families and loved ones. Tuesday's observance marked the 17th anniversary of the tragedy.
In remembrance, members of the Kappa Alpha Society placed 2,977 flags on the Quad. Each American flag represents an American citizen, and this year additional foreign flags represented the 372 foreign nationals from over 60 countries, who lost their lives. The flag display was held in conjunction with the national day of service and remembrance organized by 911day.org, a national effort to help turn a day of tragedy into a day of doing good.
HWS community members also attended a candlelight vigil organized by the Young Americans for Freedomon the steps of Coxe Hall. The vigil included a brief reading, a moment of silence and the lighting of candles in remembrance.
In 2001, the HWS community lost three alumni during the attacks at the World Trade Center, all of whom worked for the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald: Andrew H. Golkin 93, who majored in economics and was a member of the football team, Kappa Sigma, Inter-fraternity Council and International Business Club; Scott W. Rohner 01, who majored in economics and played basketball and football; and Michael J. Simon 83, P11, P13, who majored in economics, was a member of Theta Delta Chi and played ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis and golf.
A memorial plaque dedicated to Golkin, Rohner and Simon was placed on campus at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
HWS community membersalsoattended the City of Genevas ceremony of remembrance on Tuesday, Sept. 11 by the Long Pier at Lakefront Park. The event included remarks from the Mayor of the City of Geneva Ron Alcock and State Sen. Pam Helming. Interim President Patrick A. McGuire L.H.D. 12was in attendance.
