14 September 2020 Honoring and Serving on Sept. 11
This year marks the 19th anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. To commemorate the victims of the attacks, as well as their loved ones and families, the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) invites the HWS community to join the 9/11 Day at Home Initiative by doing a good deed.
The 9/11 Day at Home Initiative is a project of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. The organizations website provides resources for making the world a better place. Ideas about where to get started include: becoming an election inspector, advocating for suicide prevention, helping scientists understand COVID-19, taking a pledge to be kind, and more.
CCESL also invites HWS community members to visit online StoryCorps September 11 Initiative. The project, a partnership between StoryCorps and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, includes a recording or video message that honors each one of the victims of the attacks.
On Friday, the Colleges American flag will hang at half-staff. In addition, members of the Kappa Alpha Society will place 2,977 flags in the ground; one flag to represent every life lost in the 2001 attacks.

In 2001, the HWS community lost three alumni in the attacks at the World Trade Center, all of whom worked for the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald: Andrew H. Golkin '93, who majored in economics, was a member of the football team, Kappa Sigma, Inter-fraternity Council and the International Business Club; Scott W. Rohner '01, who majored in economics and played basketball and football; and Michael J. Simon '83, P'11, P'13, who majored in economics, was a member of Theta Delta Chi and played ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis and golf. A memorial plaque dedicated to Golkin, Rohner and Simon was placed on campus at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
In February, the Colleges profiled Robert Serra '01, whose first day as a NYC Firefighter was Sept. 11, 2001. Now, Serra is a vocal advocate and organizer for first-responders. In July, his efforts helped pass the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund. Read more about his story here.
The City of Geneva will be holding its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony on Friday at 10 a.m. The City has held a remembrance ceremony since the first anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance for this remembrance will be limited to ceremony participants and honorees only. The remembrance ceremony will be streamed live on the City's Facebook page as well as on the City's YouTube page.
