27 June 2023 Mughal '25 to intern with U.S. Congressman Jim Himes

This summer, Sophia Mughal ’25 will intern for U.S. Congressman Jim Himes (D-Conn.) in his Washington, D.C. office.

Political science and religious studies double major, Sophia Mughal ’25 is heading to Washington, D.C. this summer to intern for her representative in the House of Representatives Jim Himes (D-Conn.). In 2021, she interned for Himes in his Bridgeport office.

As an intern, Mughal will assist with constituent communications and work on staff projects. Additionally, she will attend press briefings and prepare memoranda for the Congressional staff.

“Classes I have taken in the Political Science Department have given me a better understanding of the American political process that will aid me in this internship,” shares Mughal, of Fairfield, Conn. “Overall, the communication and writing skills I have obtained at the Colleges, both in the classroom and through extracurricular leadership opportunities, have helped me prepare for this experience and will be crucial to the execution of my duties in the Congressman’s Office.”

In her hometown, Mughal has served as the Head of Policy and Research for the Fairfield Equity Coalition, an organization dedicated to promoting equity and anti-racism within Fairfield public schools and the wider Fairfield community. She has also interned with Jennifer Leeper of the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee and has served as a Fellow for Fight Back Connecticut.

Mughal hopes to pursue a career in public service, specifically looking to work on Capitol Hill or in public policy. “This experience in Congressman Himes’ Office will help me hone my skills in the political arena and allow me to spend my time and efforts serving the people of my home district,” shares Mughal.

On campus, Mughal serves as president of William Smith Congress, a Community Assistant, co-captain of the William Smith Club Ice Hockey team and a Writing Colleague. She also works for the Human Rights and Genocide Symposium at HWS.
